I imagine that this is rooted in a power differential. We inherently seek out people and institutions that don’t need us because this trait signifies their level of power or influence in an unwritten social hierarchy.
Yeah that’s definitely part of it forsure but done if these institutions don’t necessarily live or die by each customer like Hermes and some other brands
Great line - "The person unbothered by the outcome, dictates the terms of. The obsessed person, has no control. The only way you can be indifferent, is to find inner peace. With this, you’ll have nothing to fear and nobody to impress, which will make you unstoppable."
Reads like advice on my relationship with markets! lol
Really solid breakdown here! The Gatsby example particulary cuts through because it shows how desperation leaks even through the most carefully constructed persona. I've seen this play out in boardrooms where execs try too hard to seem unbothered, but that forced detachmnet just makes everyone uncomfortable. The connection between inner peace and genuine indifference is kinda the whole game.
You’re 100% right. People will try very hard to seem like they are cool or not desperate but everyone else will notice. I wrote another article last year about confidence, if your confidence isn’t backed up by competence, you’re just irrational.
Nice piece, Ben.

Interesting article, love the sarcasm of uselessness in fixing physical things within the house... Highly relatable :)
I’m glad you liked it!
It you enjoyed that, I had a whole article about why young people can’t seem to fix things anymore
